The Infrared Data Association (IrDA) defines physical specifications communications protocol standards for the short-range exchange of data over infrared light, for uses such as personal area networks (PANs).
IrDA is a very short-range example of free space optical communication. IrDA interfaces are used in palmtop computers, mobile phones, and laptop computers (most laptops and phones also offer Bluetooth but it is now becoming more common for bluetooth to simply replace IrDa in new verions of products). IrDA specifications include IrPHY, IrLAP, IrLMP, IrCOMM, Tiny TP, IrOBEX, IrLAN and IrSimple. IrDA has now produced another standard, IrFM, for Infrared financial messaging (i.e., for making payments) also known as 'Point & Pay'. For the devices to communicate via IrDA they must have a direct line of sight.

Explanation: these links are provided as part of our EE glossary project, which seeks to identify the most prominent keywords in embedded systems, embedded software, realtime and rtos, dsp (digital signal processing), system-on-a-chip, microprocessors and microcontrollers, and other constituent elements for embedded systems. While we seek to keep most of the links up-to-date, the user is refered to other primary electronic-based search sites such as: cera2.com, embedded.com, or EDN Magazine. Mark Twain quote for the day:
We all belong to the nasty stinking little human race, & of course it is not nice for God's beloved vermin to scoff at each other... Oh, we are a nasty little lot - & to think there are people who would like to save us & continue us. It won't happen if I have any influence.
